Description

What is Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP)?

Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide, also known as intestinal vasoactive polypeptide or VIP, is a peptide hormone that is vasoactive in the intestine.

It occurs naturally in many tissues, including the intestine, pancreas, and the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus.

Scientists have found that VIP stimulates heart contraction, causes vasodilation (hence the name), and lowers blood pressure. It also increases glycogen breakdown and relaxes smooth muscle in the trachea, stomach, and gallbladder.

Additionally, VIP increases motility and smooth muscle relaxation in the gastrointestinal tract. It stimulates the secretion of water, bicarbonate, and bile in pancreatic juice, promotes pepsinogen, and reduces gastric acid secretion (by inhibiting gastrin). It also inhibits water absorption in the intestines.

VIP may promote neuronal survival and regulate glycogen metabolism in the cerebral cortex. It also stimulates prolactin secretion from the pituitary gland and catecholamine release from the adrenal medulla. In the immune system, VIP regulates T-cell trafficking and inhibits mitogen-activated T-cell proliferation by suppressing IL-2 production. Other actions include electrolyte secretion stimulation and protection against oxidative injury.
